One area of concern for OSHA is how hazardous materials are handled, transported and disposed of. To help regulate this area, OSHA established certain standards for hazardous waste operations called hazwoper for short. The Hazwoper Course covers these standards and regulations.

These regulations need to be followed by any company or individual that handles hazardous waste and there has been a hazwoper course developed to train anyone that requires this certification.

In fact there are actually several courses available to prepare a worker for a job that may expose them to hazardous waste.

40 Hour Hazwoper Course

24 Hour Hazwoper Course

Both of these classes cover about the same material but the longer class goes into greater detail. Some occupations require that both classes be completed to be in compliance with the regulations from OSHA.

There is also an 8 Hour Refresher course to stay current and update on the regulations and certifications required by OSHA.

8 Hour Hazwoper Refresher

The simpler hazwoper course is the 8-hour class that is also used as a refresher to meet the yearly recertification requirements. It covers all aspects of interacting with hazardous waste including detection, identification and cleanup. There are modules on toxicology to help someone determine the origin of the waste as well as basic treatment for exposure to certain materials.

The longer 40 hour and 24 hour hazwoper classes are more complete in their coverage and are really intended for workers that will have to deal with hazardous waste on a more regular basis. This can include emergency response workers and others who work at facilities that produce hazardous waste as part of their operations.

This hazwoper course goes into greater detail about the various types of hazardous waste and how best to avoid dangerous exposure to them. There are also additional modules included in this hazwoper course to prepare an area for protection from these hazardous waste as well as the various levels of protection available for workers involved with these materials.

While both of these courses are available in person and online, the online version is very popular for most people. This online hazwoper course will cover the same material as the traditional class but allows the student more flexibility in when they complete the class. They can work on the course whenever they have free time, which makes it easy to fit the training into a busy day. Both of these courses will result in the issuing of a certificate of completion, which is required in most states to work in these environments.

Hazmat training will need to be done yearly as a refresher hazwoper course and this can be taken online as well. By completing these classes you will be better prepared to work around hazardous materials and know how best to avoid accidents.
